Tuning: Standard EADGBe
this song is played by using a plectrum, rather
than a finger picking technique, but i find it easier to fingerpick the
riff.
to achieve an authentic effect on your guitar like it is in the song,
use quite a lot of distortion so each note sounds crisp when it rings
and use a bit of reverb, too.
INTRO & CHORUS - RIFF I

PRE CHORUS RIFF
"...like the nights we spent in backs of cars"
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-1-0-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|----2-0--0-2-0-------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------2------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
then play RIFF I, for the chorus.
at the end of the chorus, before "under our bed, a monster lives"
there is a small riff played that goes like this...
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------0------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|------0--0-0---------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-33333-3--3----------------------------------------------------------------|
then the verse comes in, "under our bed, a monster lives". you can play
the chords again like on the first verse, but on the actual song, the
guitar isn't being played.
another riff is played over the top of the lyrics:
"we fight his teeth with superglue and paper clips", which goes...
e|-12-12-12-10-8-7-----------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
the chords can be heard being played again.
"well you just start and i'll say when" is accompanied by the PRE CHORUS
RIFF.
then go into the RIFF I for the chorus again.
after this, there's a bridge part.
it starts with the lyrics, "when he put you to bed..."
play these chords.
(again, refer to the song for the strumming pattern.)

e|-2-x-x---------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-3-7-5---------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-4-7-5---------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-4-7-5---------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-2-5-3---------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-x-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
this is followed by a keyboard part and backing vocals can be heard
"WOO-OOH..."
you can play the VERSE CHORDS over the top, if you wish, although the
guitar doesn't play this part.
"i'm a gear, i'm a spool of thread..."
the guitar part over these lyrics is played rapidly, with lots of reverb.
e|--7------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-8-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
"it's the end of a spark" - go into RIFF I for the chorus
and the outro part, when the lyrics stop, is just RIFF I again :)
